At no time in American history has the college application process become more confusing and competitive. Record numbers of applications flood admissions offices and colleges report lower rates of acceptance each year with more qualified entering classes. Meanwhile, colleges and universities continue to build healthier endowments and expand their facilities to seemingly unsurpassable levels of grandeur while charging astonishing tuition rates. The student (and parent) stress associated with the application process has also reached record levels as more pressure to achieve or collect acceptances of prestige dominates the landscape.

Northwood School's college guidance mission is to provide a logical sequence of application procedures that culminate with a choice of acceptances that fit well with the student's objectives. The foundation of Northwood's approach to college counseling is knowing each student well, understanding the environment in which they will excel, and finding the school at which they can achieve their dreams. Our college guidance program includes five professionals dedicated to supporting students and their families though the college search and application process. We are committed to keeping families informed and involved at every stage: parents are able to follow and assist students throughout the college search. Finally, we utilize the latest technology throughout our program, including Naviance's Family Connection, a blog packed with resources, Twitter, text messages and email.

We also believe that the college admissions process is an important stage of development for our maturing young adults who are about to take a great leap of independence when they matriculate in college. For most teenagers, the college planning and application process requires never-before undertaken amounts of self-reflection, organization, planning, re-writing, risk-taking and general discomfort. For many students it is tempting to delay or attempt to altogether avoid the whole endeavor. College guidance staff guide, support, encourage, nudge, harangue and cheerlead the student through this important life stage.
