A Household Notification Trigger is a Notification Trigger that runs on Household records. It emails the parent portal logins linked to each household that matches the trigger's Merge Filter, so a family-level message is selected by household rather than by student.

One of the following roles is required to access the Notification Triggers page: Admin Full, Admin Read, Admissions Full, Admissions Read, Development Full, Development Read, Finance Full, Finance Read, FinancialAid Full, FinancialAid Read, Health Full, Health Read, Phone Full, Registrar Full, Registrar Read, Scheduling Full, Scheduling Read, Security Full.

Who receives the message

Each portal login linked to a matching household receives its own email, sent to the email address on that login. A household with a primary and a secondary parent login therefore receives two emails, one for each login. Households with no linked portal login are skipped, and the Eligible Recipients Filter (User) can narrow the recipients further.

When Require Opt In is checked, which is the default for a new trigger, only users who opted in on their portal notification preferences receive the message. When it is unchecked, every eligible user receives it unless they opted out.

Configuring Household Trigger

  • Navigate to Notifications > Notification Triggers and click New.
  • In the Category dropdown, select Household. The Category cannot be changed after the trigger is saved.
  • Set Require Opt In, enter a Name, and check Is Active when the trigger should start running.
  • Select an Eligible Recipients Filter (User) and a Merge Filter (Household). Both are required. The Merge Filter is a saved filter on households.
  • Select an Email Template (Household). Only email templates with the Household merge type are listed, and the From address, From name, and Subject come from the template.
  • Under Custom Settings, choose the Send Rate (Daily or Weekly), optionally a Deliver at time at which the emails are sent (blank sends them during the overnight run), and, optionally, the suppression settings described in Notification Trigger Suppression.
  • Under Visible for Roles, select at least one role.
  • Click Save.

Note: Household triggers run at 1:00 AM local time, daily or weekly on the chosen Send Day of Week. They do not send on a specific calendar date.

Example: A Household trigger with Send Rate set to Weekly, Maximum fires per set to Academic Year, and Maximum number of fires set to 1 emails each parent login in a matching household once per academic year, in the first weekly run after the household matches the Merge Filter.
